چکیده
Abstract A short stratigraphic interval near Bulin in western Hunan (China) yields multiple specimens of the ~514-Myr-old oryctocarine trilobite Oryctocarella duyunensis . Size data obtained from these indicate that, meraspid degree 1 onward, degrees represent successive instars. Meraspid growth persisted until a terminal stage was reached, providing first example determinate trilobites and, notably, an early Cambrian species. The sample contains three varieties such stages, recognized as holaspids, with 9, 10, or 11 thoracic segments, respectively. During phase, rates were not constant this pattern seen assemblage differs modestly that reported same species two other localities, attesting to microevolutionary variation developmental patterns among collections.

Development and trunk segmentation of early instars of a ptychopariid trilobite from Cambrian Stage 5 of China
Many three-dimensionally preserved exoskeletons found from the middle Cambrian (Stage 5) Gaotai Formation in Guizhou, southern China, have been assigned to the ptychopariid trilobite Gunnia sp. They represent mainly a series of early instars, exhibiting some delicate structures and morphological variation associated with their trunk segmentation and early development. Morphometric and statistic...
متن کاملExploring developmental modes in a fossil arthropod: growth and trunk segmentation of the trilobite Aulacopleura konincki.
Trilobites offer the opportunity to explore postembryonic development within the fossil record of arthropod evolution. In contrast to most trilobites, the Silurian proetid Aulacopleura konincki from the Czech Republic exhibits marked variation in the mature number of thoracic segments, with five morphs with 18-22 thoracic segments. The combination of abundant articulated specimens available fro...
متن کاملModularity of a Cambrian ptychoparioid trilobite cranidium.
Modularity of the cranidium of Crassifimbra? metalaspis, a Cambrian ptychoparioid trilobite, is investigated using landmark-based geometric morphometric methods to gain insight into the integration among morphogenetic processes responsible for shaping the head of an ancient arthropod. Of particular interest is the extent to which the structure of phenotypic integration was governed by direct in...
متن کاملA Cambrian peak in morphological variation within trilobite species.
Morphological variation within species is a raw material subject to natural selection. However, temporal change in morphological diversity has usually been studied in terms of variation among rather than within species. The distribution of polymorphic traits in cladistic character-taxon matrices reveals that the frequency and extent of morphological variation in 982 trilobite species are greate...
متن کاملSegmentation, metamerism and the Cambrian explosion.
Data on the molecular and genetic basis of animal development, and on genome sequences, have been challenging our established assumptions about animal evolution for the last decade. Recent such data in animals of particular phylogenetic importance beg us to take another look at whether similarities in developmental and genetic mechanisms in current animals are the product of a common inheritanc...
